Additional Details Emerge About the Killing of Makayla Rose DeSantis in Maine
Maine State Police say a 911 call reporting a shooting at a condominium in Carrabassett Valley came in around 7:30 p.m. on March 8. The victim, 23-year-old Makayla Rose DeSantis of Connecticut, was taken to Franklin Hospital in Farmington before being flown to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where she later died.
Investigators say the shooting happened at a Left Bank condominium, a property where Sugarloaf houses some employees. Austin Doucette, 24, told dispatchers and investigators that DeSantis, his girlfriend, was accidentally shot.
Police stopped Doucette in Kingfield while he was driving DeSantis toward medical help. Officers found what appeared to be blood inside the vehicle.
During multiple 911 calls, the caller repeatedly said the gun had gone off accidentally, apologized, and said, “I can’t believe I did this.” He also reportedly said, “I don’t want to go to jail.”
A search of the condominium uncovered a .45-caliber handgun on a couch along with three spent shell casings. Investigators found evidence that multiple bullets had been fired, with some striking furniture and even traveling into the condo below.
An autopsy determined that DeSantis died from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled her death a homicide. Doucette was arrested the following night on a warrant.
