Man Cashes in 500 Pounds of Pennies
There are all kind of sayings about pennies. ‘A penny saved is a penny earned’. ‘See a penny pick it up all day long you’ll have good luck’. Kids today don’t seem to think a penny is worth having, but I still remember saving them when I was young.
I know when my kids ask me for change and I hand them pennies they balk at them, maybe that’s because you can’t buy much with a penny these days. But saving pennies can still add up to a pretty good chunk of change.
An 81 year old man in Texas, Ira Keys, has saved every penny he came across for more than 60 years. He finally took them to the bank to cash them in, 81,000 pennies that weighed more than 500 pounds. He started saving them in 1952 when his Father told him to save his money and he has been saving ever since.
It took bank employees more than an hour to count the coins and when it was all said and done he had $816.00. Now that he has cashed his stash, he going to start collecting all over again.
