According to an article on the WMTW website, a man from New York was seriously injured after he fell from the roof of a moving Concord Trailways bus.

The man has been identified as 35-year-old Derrick McDuffy, of New York.

The incident reportedly happened near mile marker two on the Maine Turnpike just after 11 o'clock on Friday morning.

State troopers say several people were already helping McDuffy when they arrived. Fellow passengers and drivers who had stopped were giving aid right there on the side of the road.

McDuffy was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital in New Hampshire.  Police say his injuries are serious but not expected to be life-threatening.

According to witnesses, McDuffy said he felt overheated and opened the emergency roof hatch. They say he then climbed onto the roof of the bus while it was still moving.

The bus driver started slowing down as soon as they realized what was going on. Police say the driver was trying to pull over when McDuffy fell from the roof and hit the highway, landing on the shoulder.

The Maine Turnpike Authority said at 11:30 in the morning that at least one lane was closed.  Just before noon, all lanes were open again.

Traffic on I 95 south did back up for a short time.

A traffic camera photo showed several ambulances at the scene and a Concord Coach Lines bus pulled off to the side of the highway.

It is unclear why Duffy climbed on to the roof of the bus.  Our thoughts are with Mr. McDuffy and his family and we hope he makes a speedy recovery.
