Maine Man in Jail After He Allegedly Assaulted a Baby
Even though, overall, Maine is a very safe place to live, we do occasionally hear about tragic crimes being committed.
Sometimes, these crimes are even committed against children and infants. Over the last few years, we have heard several stories of minors being seriously injured or killed.
Sadly, it looks like such a crime has happened again.
According to an article on the WCSH 6 website, a Brewer man is facing charges after he allegedly assaulted a newborn.
The article explains that, on Thursday (June 26th),members of the Brewer Police responded to the report of a 14-day-old baby being injured.
Following an investigation done by police on the scene, 21-year-old Matthew Lane was taken into custody and charged with Class C assault. He was transported to the Penobscot County Jail, where he remains as the investigation continues.
The baby was brought to a hospital for evaluation. Thankfully, medical professionals determined the baby did not appear to have any significant injuries. Still, given how young the child is, any possible harm is being taken extremely seriously.
Police say the Maine Department of Health and Human Services has been notified, which is standard in cases involving young children. DHHS will probably conduct its own investigation to determine whether there are any concerns about the child’s safety going forward.
