Much Of Downtown Augusta Put On The National Register Of Historic Places

In addition to being cool (especially for history geeks like me), it has economic benefits, too!

According to the KJ, a significant portion of downtown Augusta has been named to the National Register of Historic Places.  The "historic" area includes most of the buildings on both sides of Water Street.

It means building owners can now take advantage of state and federal historic preservation tax credits that could pay for as much as 45 percent of renovation costs.

According to Augusta Mayor David Rollins, it would help building owners with the cost of converting unused upper floors into apartments.
