The New England Patriots start the regular season this Sunday in Buffalo and they are expected to sign Enfield, Maine native Matt Mulligan to a contract. Mulligan is a former University of Maine football player and also played at Husson University in Bangor.Mulligan, 28, played last season with the St.Louis Rams and had spent three seasons with the New York Jets.

Mulligan, who is 6-foot-4 and 275-pounds, was one of the final cuts of the Green Bay Packers during this preseason. It looks like Mulligan will fill the Patriots roster spot that was vacated after they cut fullback James Develin on Monday.

Mulligan with join Rob Gronkowski, Michael Hoomanawanui and rookie Zach Sudfield as tight ends on the roster.

Mulligan has 14 receptions for 144 yards and one touchdown in his NFL career. He is also known as a strong run blocker and special teams player.
