If you are over the age of 30 there is a good chance that you grew up with Halloween being a one day event.  Everything was centered around October 31st.  All of the major events, many of the parties, and all of the trick-or-treating.

These days, it feels like Halloween has turned into a month-long holiday.  There are movie marathons that run the whole month of October, haunted attractions that are open for weeks leading up to Halloween, and trick-or-treating events spread out over several weeks toward the end of the month.

Personally, I love how everything is spread out.  So many of us don't work Monday through Friday, 9-to-5 jobs.  The numerous days means that we can almost always take our kids to at least one of the bigger events.

Nightmare on Main Street in Waterville

According to a posting on the City of Waterville Facebook page, Downtown Waterville will get a spooky makeover later this month as Nightmare on Main Street returns for its third annual celebration of Halloween.

Discover Waterville is hosting the event on Saturday, October 24, 2026, with activities planned throughout the evening, including trick-or-treating, pumpkin carving, live entertainment and a screening of a cult classic Halloween movie.

The festivities begin at 4 PM with a trunk-or-treat event along Main Street and at Castonguay Square. Pumpkin carving will also get underway at 4 PM at Waterville Creates.

At 5:45 PM, the Dancing Witches of Merkaba Sol are scheduled to perform at Castonguay Square near Holy Cannoli, adding another Halloween-themed attraction to the downtown celebration.

The evening will continue at 8 PM with a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Waterville Opera House.

Organizers say Main Street will close to vehicle traffic beginning at noon on October 24 to allow crews to prepare for the event.

Nightmare on Main Street is returning for its third year, offering residents and visitors an opportunity to celebrate Halloween while exploring downtown Waterville.
