Belfast, Maine, Re-Evaluating Restaurant Outdoor Dining Regulations

Even though, for most of us, the pandemic was 18 months of misery, there were a few good takeaways from the event.

For example, we learned that, in most cases, we could still be productive if we were working remotely.  In some cases, we were even more productive when we were working remotely.

We also learned that restaurants that lacked patios and decks could still work with local municipalities to create outdoor dining spaces.

For the last few years, downtown Belfast businesses have had the opportunity to rent two parking spaces in front of their businesses.  These businesses can use these spaces to set up tables and chairs to create an outdoor dining space.

In 2024, the cost to have an outdoor dining space from May 1st through October 31st was a very reasonable $250.  Yeah, only $250 for the entire season.

However, it looks like those fees will soon be going up.

According to an article on the WCSH 6 website, the cost to have outdoor dining in 2025 will be $750.  Some are saying that the price could increase to $1,000 in 2026.

Since the pandemic, the program has become a little controversial.  While many downtown eateries and coffee shops love the opportunity to have outdoor seating, some retailers are not happy about it.

The biggest issue that some shop owners have is that it takes up valuable parking spaces.  This is especially true during the busy summer tourist season.

Personally, I am a big fan of programs like this one.  As a resident of the Augusta/Waterville area, I love the idea of being able to have a beer or a meal outside at the Whiskey Kitchen or Silver Street Tavern.
