In Wales and Northern Ireland the economy is hitting hard as one in three villages are seeing the closing of a pub. Very unusual for Ireland as the Irish are known to love their pubs and visit them frequently.

Confidence in the Irish economy is low and the result is a real problem for community businesses. In Ireland, pubs are more than drinking establishments, volunteer and support groups meet at pubs and the closing of the pubs hinders these organizations. The problem seems to be the same old story of super stores opening in rural areas and people are going there to shop instead of staying in the villages.
