Maine RSU 4 Forced to Suspend Bus Service Due to Driver Shortage

Maine's school bus driver shortage certainly isn't anything new. This is something that school districts all around the state have been dealing with for years, though now it really seems to be getting bad.

The shortage has gotten so severe that one Maine school district has been forced to temporarily suspend their bus routes altogether. According to WGME 13, Maine's RSU 4 (Sabattus, Wales, Litchfield) sent a notice home to parents on Wednesday afternoon stating that due to a driver shortage there would be no available school-provided transportation available for the next 'few days'.

RSU 4 parent Tiffany Hurd told WGME 13, “Since school started, they’ve been running behind. They’ve had a lot of issues with I think coverage and having to extend the routes and stuff.”

The cancellation of the district's bussing routes is expected to last until at least September 14th according to school officials. If parents are unable to figure out transportation to and from school until buses resume service, the district indicated that remote learning would be an option for those students.
