Nor’easter Unearths 142-Year-Old Massachusetts Shipwreck
Over the weekend, much of the northeast got a thrashing from an early season Nor'easter. As the storm roared up the east coast, it caused damage, injuries, and at least one death.
Additionally, it also unearthed a piece of history.
According to an article on the NBC website, the big waves of the storm may have uncovered the remains of a 19th-century shipwreck on a Nantucket, Massachusetts beach.
Jason Graziadei, editor-in-chief of the Nantucket Current, spotted pieces of an old wooden ship on the island’s south shore Saturday and shared a video online.

He believes the remains are from the Warren Sawyer, a three-masted schooner that wrecked near Miacomet Beach in 1884.
Similar pieces of the ship first appeared in 2022. Researchers later studied historical records, photos and archaeological evidence and determined the wreckage was most likely from the Warren Sawyer.
While experts believe that the wreckage is from the Warren Sawyer, they are saying that more tests need to be done before it can be confirmed that it is from that particular wreck.
The ship was traveling from New Orleans to Boston when it wrecked on December 22, 1884. It was carrying more than 1,100 bales of cotton and 28 tons of scrap metal.
