According to a post on the WCSH 6 website, and the Lamoine Fire Department Facebook page, a longtime member of the department has passed away following a lengthy illness.

The article explains that Lamoine Fire Chief George “Skip” Smith, who led the department for nearly five decades and was among the longest-serving fire chiefs in Maine, has died following an undisclosed illness.

Smith served as fire chief for the past 49 years and was the longest continuously serving employee of the town of Lamoine, the town said in a Facebook post.

That post said, in part:

It is with great sadness that we report that Lamoine Fire Chief George "Skip" Smith has passed away following a lengthy illness. Skip was the Chief for the past 49 years and was the longest continuing employee of the Town of Lamoine.

He joined the Lamoine Fire Department as a teenager and dedicated most of his life to public service in the community.

Funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days, according to the town. The town extended condolences to Smith’s wife, Carol; his daughters, Alicia and Meghan; their children; and his many friends and colleagues.
