Here’s Why Police Have Been So Tight-Lipped About the Death of the Midcoast Maine Woman

According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety's Shannon Moss, the body of a woman had been discovered at Crawford Pond in Union, Maine on Thursday, July 3rd.

The body had been discovered during the search for a missing paddleboarder.

A few days after the discovery, it was revealed that the body belonged to the missing person.  The deceased was identified as 48-year-old Sunshine Stewart, of Trenton.

While police have asked for the public's help with information pertaining to the case, they have revealed very few details about the case.

We now have some idea as to why there have been few details released.

According to WABI, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss has said that police have withheld many details, such as her cause of death, because releasing the information could compromise the investigation.

Moss says detectives are working around the clock and following every possible lead. They're not ruling anything out, and they’ll share updates when the time is right.  That is, when it’s both appropriate and responsible to do so.

Meanwhile, friends and family of Stewart are asking folks in the area to check their phones. If you were near Crawford Pond anytime around the Fourth of July weekend, even if you were just hanging out by the water, they’re hoping you’ll take a second look at those photos or videos.  Even something that seems small or unrelated could help.
