One of the best parts of living in Maine is that crime is much lower than the national average. According to recent FBI Crime Report data, Maine had a 1.2 violent crimes per 1,000 residents; that's compared to the national average of 3.67 violent crimes per 1,000 citizens.

Safewise.com produced a list of the 20 safest cities in Maine. To make their list, they only choose towns with 3,000 or more residents. They examined the number of violent crimes, consisting of robbery, murder, aggravated assault and forcible rape, as well as property crimes, that include burglary, arson, motor vehicle theft, and larceny-theft.
