This week, the top-ranked math students from high schools around the country went head-to-head with competitors from more than 100 countries at the International Mathematical Olympiad in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The U.S. team last won the Olympiad in 1994 which has raised concerns that American math students are falling behind those in the rest of the world. Another worry is that boys are falling behind girls.

The U.S. math team, all boys, won the math Olympiad for the first time in 21 years. Its win is being compared to the ‘Miracle on Ice’.  The U.S. won the competition with 185 points, just beating out China’s team, which scored 181. South Korea clinched third place.

Each team was given three math problems to solve, it’s said ‘if you can solve just one problem’, your considered a genius. Carnegie Mellon University professor and U.S. head coach Po-Shen Loh  said the Olympiad results were proof that top Americans can hold their own with representatives from other countries.
