What Is Juneteenth?
Around the web today, you may see the word "Juneteenth" pop up, and you may wonder to yourself, "what on earth is that?" To understand what June 19th represents, we have to go back 133 years. Today we commemorate the signing of the Abolition of Slavery in the State of Texas and the emancipation of African Americans in the United States throughout the former Confederacy of the Southern United States.
Celebrations include, reading of the Emancipation Proclamation, singing, "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," and in certain areas readings from noted African American writers such as Maya Angelou. You can read all about Juneteenth, here.
