Today (Jan. 30) is the day! Recreational marijuana is now legal in Maine.

The first tangible results of state voters' decision to legalize marijuana are being felt as possession and home growth of marijuana becomes legal.

Voters narrowly passed the ballot question in November, and the waiting period between the vote and legalization has expired.

The vote was close, and opponents are continuing to push for restrictions.

The law allows an individual to possess as much as 2.5 ounces of marijuana. According to the Press Herald, "...you can roll about 60 marijuana cigarettes, or joints, with each ounce. You can also give a friend up to 2.5 ounces as long as you don’t take anything in return."

You still could be fined up to $100 for using marijuana in public.

There is still a moratorium on retail sales, until at least February 2018. Lawmakers want time to set up a licensing and regulatory frameworks.
