According to an article on the WGME website, authorities are saying a deadly crash in the town of Penobscot over the weekend may have been caused by a combination of speed and alcohol.

According to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened Saturday on Front Ridge Road.

Investigators say 35-year-old Zachary McKechnie of Bucksport was behind the wheel when his vehicle left the roadway.

Deputies believe McKechnie then attempted to correct the situation, but lost control in the process.  The vehicle reportedly swerved back onto the road before rolling over. During the crash, he was thrown from the vehicle.

First responders arrived at the scene quickly, but officials say McKechnie did not survive his injuries.

Authorities have indicated that both excessive speed and alcohol are considered likely contributing factors in the crash.  The incident remains under investigation as officials continue to piece together the exact sequence of events leading up to it.

Front Ridge Road was impacted for a period of time as crews responded and worked to clear the scene.

No other injuries were reported.
