The Delphi Automotive PLC vehicle started is cross country drive. The Delphi is a driverless car that is making a 3,500 mile trip from coast to coast.

Road tests have been made on the streets of Las Vegas and California and Sunday it began its cross country trip. This is the longest driverless car trip ever attempted.

Sending the automated vehicle cross-country will be the ultimate test according to chief tech officer Jeff Owens. The car will encounter changing weather conditions, road hazards and changing terrain, things it would never see in a lab environment.

The car, will navigate 4-way stops, merge onto highways and avoid other road distractions. There will be a ‘driver’ in the vehicle but will remain ‘hands-off’ unless an emergency arises, then the driver can take immediate control of the car.

The trip began Sunday near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and will end when the Delphi PLC arrives in New York.
