The major reconstruction project on the heavily-traveled outer section of Western Avenue in Augusta has resumed.

The $3.8 million project to reconstruct a half-mile section of Western Avenue from Prescott Road to Edison Drive started in September of 2013 and was scheduled to have ended in August of 2014.

Delays in the project included rebuilding the road surface and placing utility wires and new gas, sewer and water lines underground along the travel lanes.

The final phase of the construction begins on Tuesday and will include the completion of curbing and guardrail installation, sidewalk construction and paving, loaming and seeding of lawns, installation of raised median islands, and installation of the final layer of pavement.

Traffic will be one-way, alternating traffic, mostly at night.
