Maine Spends Almost $2 Million a Year on ‘Bad Behavior’
Bad behavior, like sexual harassment, sex discrimination or retaliation in the state work place setting is costing tax payers almost two million dollars a year and about half a million defense cost. Over all the most common charges were sexual harassment, sex discrimination and retaliation. Just under half of the cases came out of two departments: Corrections and Public Safety.
Now, since the settlement payments don’t come from regular insurance, the state is self-insured, taxpayers foot the bill. In the settlement agreements, the state admits no liability, and the agreements are usually written in a way that prevents full public disclosure.
