Maine tied California as having the best high schools in the United States, according to the percentage of schools receiving the top honors in the yearly ranking by U.S. News & World Report.

Maine and California both had just over 22 percent of high school with either a gold or silver rankings.

The top 500 schools in the country were awarded the gold medal (top 2 percent). Rankings were based on college readiness, based on Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate test data.

Silver medals were given to 1,519 schools (7 percent of schools)

The Top 10 Ranked High Schools in Maine were:

  1. Maine School of Science and Mathematics in Limestone
  2. Falmouth High School
  3. Yarmouth High School
  4. Cape Elizabeth High School
  5. Kennebunk High School
  6. Wells High School
  7. York High School
  8. Camden Hills Regional High School
  9. Orono High School
  10. Scarborough High School

The Maine School of Science and Mathematics in Limestone ranked #13 nationally.
