March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month [Sponsored Post]

seen a bunch of people wearing blue today (March 1)? If so, it may be more than just a fashion choice, it may be a way to show their support for the start of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States for both men and women. The good news is that colorectal cancer is largely preventable through regular screening. According to the National Cancer Institute, colorectal cancer is a disease in which cells in the colon or rectum become abnormal and divide without control, forming a mass called a tumor. The exact causes of colorectal cancer are not known. However, studies show that certain factors increase a person's chance of developing colorectal cancer.

People should talk with their health care provider about when to begin screening for colorectal cancer, what tests to have, the benefits and risks (potential harms) of each test, and how often to schedule appointments.
