One of the Most Guarded Places in the World is 6 Hours From Maine

Chances are you've heard the term "secured location". Perhaps movies and television shows have tricked us into believing there are secret spots around the world filled with armed guards and high-tech security systems. Or do places like that actually exist?

According to MoneyWise, there are 25 heavily secured places across the globe that rank as the 'most guarded' spots in the world. Behind the impenetrable walls and highly-trained security sits precious metals, vital information, and precious artifacts.

Most of these heavily guarded spots make perfect sense. Everywhere from the White House to Fort Knox is on the list for obvious reasons. But would you believe that one of the most guarded places in the world is a six-hour drive from Maine?

Ranked as the #14 most guarded place in the world is the Communications Security Establishment in Ottawa, Canada. The CSE operates like a hybrid of the FBI and CIA in the United States. They are responsible for things like Canada's cyber security as well as their foreign intelligence.

Unlike some of the other entries on MoneyWise's list, the Communications Security Establishment's location isn't a secret. It's an entire complex in Ottawa, located at 1625 Vanier Parkway. From the outside, the CSE almost looks like a corporate retreat that features sports courts and miles of walking trails.

The CSE is about a six-and-a-half-hour drive from Portland. From other points in Maine closer to the Canadian border, you could trim that time by another half-hour or so. Places in New Hampshire and Vermont can reach the CSE in under four hours.
