Spring is getting closer and the Maine Warden Service is warning people that ice conditions across Maine lakes and ponds are becoming dangerous.  Before you head out on the ice, you really should test the thickness using an ice chisel or ice auger and check with locals known thin ice areas.

The idea is to sit on a block of ice that stands about three feet tall and one foot square and stay there for 48 hours; it’s called the Ice Pole Sitting Contest and carries a prize of $3,100 for the winners.
