Living in the Northeast, we often avoid many of the natural disasters that hit the Southern part of the country, but Maine has still had its share of disasters over the last few years.

Here are 5 of the worst natural disasters ever to take place in Maine, according to Only In Your State.

5 - February Nor'easter Of 1969 - Originally forecast as nothing more than a chance of snow, it ended up dropping between 32-42 inches.

4. The Saint John River Flood Of 2008 - The worst flooding of the river in 35 years.  Most people thought that the damage was strictly in Canada, but much a Northern Maine was affected.

3. Fires Of 1947 - Due to dry conditions that Summer, fires burned 17,188 acres of land across York County and Mount Desert Island.  Smaller fires were reported in the southern part of the state.  Fires continued through the month of October 1947.

2. December Nor'easter of 1960 - The storm, which stretched from Virginia to Maine, brought heavy snow and EXTREMELY high winds (90 MPH).  The temperature dropped to deadly lows and thousands of vehicles were left stranded on snowy roads.

1. Ice Storm Of 1998 - The storm, which hit the state in January of 1998, took out power for half the state.  Some people were left in the dark for as long as two weeks.  Additionally, it was responsible for millions of dollars in damage.
