This Friday is September 11th, the 19th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, and as we every year, the Red Cross is hosting their 9/11 Day of Remembrance blood drives. As in previous years, there will be multiple locations of Augusta, Auburn, and Portland.

These blood drives honor the heroes that lost their lives that day and those who stepped up in volunteer service. The American Red Cross reminds you it was the blood on the shelves on September 11th, 2001 that helped to save lives.

The need is always there…for emergencies, surgeries, and some medical treatments.

I gave blood for the very first time this year. I had not done it before because I was scared. That is the only reason. So I put on my big girl panties and did it. Did it hurt? Not really. There was a little pinch when they first put the needle in, but it was fine, and the staff was excellent. They are also taking many precautions for the safety of everyone involved. So if you are healthy and are able to donate, please consider it and don’t let the fear of the unknown hold you back.

9/11 Day of Remembrance blood drive locations and hours:

Augusta Civic Center from 11 am to 6 pm

Auburn Fire Department from 1- 6 pm

Portland Elks Club from noon to 5p

To schedule your appointment today, visit RedCrossBlood.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767), or use the Blood Donor App. Enter sponsor code: REMEMBER.

Last I checked there were some times that were still open for blood donations...and remember you get cookies and crackers when you are done. BONUS!

So, September 11th not working for your schedule? Check out another date. The need will still be there and you will still be a hero.
