According to the City of Augusta website, the Augusta City Council will discuss a proposed ordinance that would impose fee on plastic bags at tonight's (March 21st) meeting.

According to notes in the agenda, the goal is to protect our environment.

Under the law, stores would be asked to offer "single-use" bags for $0.05 each.

At least for the first year, shoppers on government assistance (SNAP, etc) would be exempt from the fee.

Store who are found in violation of the law could be fined as much as $500 for repeat offenses.

If passed, the law would go into effect on July 1st, 2019
