If you have passed a fifth grade social studies class, there is a good chance that you understand that our laws are always changing.

For example, if you traveled back to the early 20th century, you'd find that women couldn't vote, a large part of the country was racially segregated, there was no minimum wage, alcohol was illegal, and there were no protections for the LGBTQ community.

A lot has changed in the last 100+ years.

Of course, some of these law changes were on a national level, but even more were in a state level.

Each year, the Maine Legislature votes on dozens of new laws and changes to existing laws.

Here are some of the more notable laws going into effect on January 1st, 2026:

Maine Laws Taking Effect On January 1st, 2026

These new Maine laws will go into effect on January 1st, 2026

As you can see, many of these new laws deal specifically with the taxation of certain goods and services.

Two of the most notable are the increases to taxes on recreational marijuana and tobacco/nicotine products.

Speaking of taxes, the one law that is expected to impact the most people in the state is the new tax on streaming services.  With the exception of a very few people, most of us use at least one streaming service.

One of the laws that does not directly deal with money does deal with saving money.  The "one-click" cancellation law is meant to make it easier to cancel services like streaming subscriptions and gym memberships.
