There have been reports of a black bear roaming the streets of Newport this week. Police have received calls of a small black bear seen in town on Tuesday evening and on Wednesday morning.Newport Police Chief Leonard Macdaid, tells the Bangor Daily News that a small black bear has been seen near the Vic Firth drumstick factory on High Street and was spotted near the Riverside Cemetery by a woman walking her dog.

One person snapped a picture of the bear but Newport police and Maine game wardens have been unable to find the bear.

Macdaid said he doesn't believe the bear is sick, but think it is lost. Adding, the bear is 'probably more scared of you than you are of it.'

Macdaid asked anyone who spots the bear to call 911 or the Newport Police Department at 368-3263.
