A major traffic accident involving over 40 vehicles in Etna has closed the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 for what officials say could be several hours.According to Steve McCausland, Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesman, I-95 northbound between Newport and Bangor is closed and motorists should take exits in Etna and Newport to avoid the crash site.

The crash began around 7:30 am as heavy snow was falling in the area, McCausland said, adding that in addition to a number of cars, a school bus and tractor trailer were involved in the accident.

McCausland said no fatalities have been reported, but several people have been injured and some of those appear to be in "serious condition." He added that the last of the victims are in the process of being removed from their vehicles.

According to McCausland, one veteran state trooper at the scene described it as "a giant pile of metal."
