Brittany’s Spoiler-Filled Rant About The Season Finale of The Mandalorian
Season 2 of Disney+'s The Mandalorian has come to a close. If you listen to me on-air at all you know I'm just slightly obsessed with the show. This is the way.
This episode was an emotional roller-coaster for me from the beginning when I saw that the episode was entitled, The Rescue. I thought, "Phew, at least we'll get a happy ending until season 3 which comes out NEXT Christmas." Plus, I can't tell you the panic that set in after Episode 14 entitled, The Tragedy.
So I'm going into the episode PUMPED. Bo-Katan is back in the story still fighting for Mandalore. Boba Fett is there kicking butt. Off to a great start.
Fast-forward to Din/Mando finally freeing Grogu. I was elated, of course. Then all hell breaks loose with the Dark Troopers. Grogu reaches out through The Force to, who I presumed, was Ahsoka Tano since, well, that's the only Jedi we've encountered on The Mandalorian. I saw the X-Wing and I thought that was a cool addition. Not questioning what the heck Ahsoka was doing in it.
So there I am beginning to sob once "she" showed up. Cheering her on as she was slaying Dark Troopers left and right excited for her to join the rest of the crew. It was much like my sobbing when just about everyone showed up to defeat Thanos at the end of Avengers: End Game. And then...
I was shocked. That's no orange lady. That's a man! For a moment I was disappointed that this would be a new character and for that brief moment, I couldn't have been more wrong.
IT WAS LUKE SKYWALKER.
And cue the sobs of utter disbelief. I mean, this was such a great choice that I never even imagined it would be possible. Even with the fact that the technology is there, Mark Hamill is still alive, and they obviously love tying characters in, like Boba, Ashoka, and Bo-Katan.
So there I am processing Luke while he's Force walkie-talkie-ing with Grogu who is asking for permission to go with him to train from Din Djardin.
Din/Mando of course, says yes. And in the most tender moment takes the helmet off! And there I am on my couch, tears, snot, the whole nine.
Oh, and R2-Freaking-D2 is there too.
And away they went.
So here's the dark question. We learn in Episode VII that Kylo Ren slaughters the younglings at Luke's Jedi Temple. Will Grogu be one of the victims after surviving the wrath of Kylo's grandfather?
I'm leaning, and hoping, towards it being unlikely. In large part because The Mandalorian has been a feel-good series from the start. I can't imagine Disney pulling something so tragic for Grogu. Plus, I can't imagine setting up an ending so obvious.
My guess, based on what could be foreshadowing from Ahsoka, is that Grogu won't complete Jedi training. She pointed out that he has a strong connection with Din/Mando. And if anyone knows the danger in that, it's Anakin Skywalker's Padawan. I think at some point he'll leave the temple, either on his own, or Din/Mando will end up there for some reason.
I do think Disney would sacrifice Din/Mando in a heroic way to save Grogu, though. Will they? I'm not sure.
At the end of the day, the show is The Mandalorian, not The Grogu Show but that cash cow is too hefty to abandon in the next season. They will cross paths. Perhaps a slight flash-forward?
I suppose all we can do is speculate.
