Central Maine Healthcare Reports Massive Data Breach That Affected Over 100,000 Mainers
Back in December, WMTW reported that Central Maine Health had reported a data breach that reportedly happened back in the middle of 2025.
Initially, the healthcare company reported that only about eight patients had their data stolen. Now, it looks like that number may have been seriously underestimated.
According to WGME, Officials are now saying the Central Maine Healthcare data breach was much bigger and that over 100,000 people were affected by the breach.
Representatives for CMHC initially said an unauthorized party got into its network on March 19, 2025, and stayed there until June 1. When the company first announced the breach, back in December, it had said that only 8 people were affected.
A new filing with the Maine Attorney General’s Office shows the breach actually affected 145,381 people, including about 138,800 Mainers.
According to Central Maine Healthcare, the hackers may have accessed patient information like names, dates of birth, treatment details, dates of service, provider names, and health insurance information. For some patients, Social Security numbers may have been included as well.
CMHC says letters have now gone out to affected patients, warning them their information may have been accessed and outlining steps they can take to protect themselves.
