Here’s Why Nearly 6,000 Central Maine Homes Lost Power on Tuesday
If your home lost power on Tuesday morning, you are not alone.
According to an article in the KJ, nearly 6,000 Central Maine Power customers in Central Maine lost power for a portion of the morning.
The article explains that about 2,600 households in Waterville, about 2,000 homes in Winslow, and about 900 customers in Vassalboro lost power.
It appears that the power outage was due to a Monday night lightning strike.
While many people slept, a series of strong thunderstorms rolled through Central Maine overnight. In addition to thunder and lightning, these storms brought significant winds and heavy rainfall to the area.
It is believed that a bolt of lightning struck some power transmission equipment during the night. However, for whatever reason, the power failure did not happen until about 9 on Tuesday morning.
Thanks to CMP's remote control systems, power was back on in Waterville in a matter of minutes. And within 15 minutes, power had been restored to most customers in Winslow and Vassalboro.
On a personal note, I completely forgot that we got hit with a really bad storm in Augusta at about 11 p.m. last night, until I saw this article on KJ's website. Just after 11, there was a clap of thunder that was so powerful that it shook my house. It seemed like it was just that one thunderous boom (I'm assuming it was because I was back asleep a few seconds later).
