According to an article on the WABI website, a 5-year-old boy is dead following a single-vehicle crash late Thursday night in Hancock County.

Maine State Police say the crash happened just before 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of Route 9 and Route 193 in Township 22.

When troopers arrived, they found the child in the front passenger seat with life-threatening injuries. Police say they immediately began life-saving measures until emergency crews arrived, but the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say the driver, 33-year-old Dion Campbell of Indiana, and a 10-month-old girl were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police say Campbell is the father of both children, and they were the only occupants in the vehicle.

According to investigators, the vehicle appears to have failed to stop at a stop sign before crashing into an embankment. Police also say neither child was properly restrained at the time of the crash.

Route 9 was shut down for several hours overnight while crews processed the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
