New England is not known for its tropical climate.  In fact, most New England states spend about 1/3 of the year in a deep freeze.

Maine is no exception to this rule.

With the exception of our coast, we spend most of the winter living in a frozen tundra.  The cooler temperatures are not limited to just the winter, though.  Compared to many other states, Maine stays cool for the majority of the year.  In Maine, temperatures in the low 80s is considered a real heatwave.

Have you ever wondered which Maine town is the coldest?

The Telegraph and Stacker recently put out a list of the coldest cities in each state.  For Maine, they chose the Aroostook County town of Caribou.

After looking at data from 2018 through 2022, they found that the average annual temperature was 41.7 degrees Fahrenheit.  The average daily maximum temperature was 5.1 F and the average daily minimum was 31.8 F.

Additionally, they found that Caribou was the 3rd coldest city in the country.

There was a tie for coldest city in the country.  Both Mount Washington, New Hampshire, and Utqiagvik, Alaska, took the top spot.  Yes, Mount Washington does count as a city because it has its own zip code.

Keep in mind that these numbers are based on an average over a full 12-month period.  They are not specifically about the winter months.

If you were looking at the temperatures during the coldest months, you’d find that Caribou typically has an average temperature of around 3 degrees in January.  Makes you shiver just thinking about it, doesn’t it?
