Costco’s New Gas-Only Stations Might Be Coming to Maine Soon

I think we can all agree that gas prices in Central Maine are out of control right now.

Yes, they have been worse, but when you consider the fact that inflation has us paying more for everything, it is painful.

It has gotten so bad that people are literally posting receipts like they just bought concert tickets. At this point, it might be cheaper to ride a moose to work.

That's one of the reasons why we have seen so many people taking advantage of gas station brand rewards programs and by joining gas refund programs, like Upside.

One of the other ways people are saving money on gas is by joining warehouse clubs.  I've talked to several people who joined Costco for the sole purpose of getting that discount on gas.

If the gas discount was the main reason you signed up for Costco, we've got some good news for you: Costco will soon open stand-alone gas stations.

Where Can I Find Costco Gas Stations?

According to USA Today, the retailer is dipping their toes in the water with this concept.

The first of these stand-alone gas stations will be located in Mission Viejo, California, and it is expected to open in the spring of 2026.

There is no word on where the company may be eyeing for additional locations.

They are probably waiting to see how the initial location works out before expanding the concept.

Will You Need to Be a Costco Member to Save on Gas?

As far as we know, yes, you will need to be a member to fuel up at these standalone gas stations.

Currently, the cheapest membership plan for Costco is $65.  Maybe, if these gas stations work out, they'll start offering a 'gas only' membership option.

However, as the company does not make much money off the sale of gas, it appears that the addition of these gas stations is just to make purchasing a $65 annual membership more appealing.

When Will Maine See Standalone Gas Stations in Maine?

At this point, the company has only announced the California location.

It appears that they are waiting to see whether or not the first standalone gas station makes sense before committing to opening additional gas stations.

As of June 2025, the only Costco location we have in Maine is in Scarborough.  That location does have an attached gas station.
