With rising costs of living and inflation, many consumers are looking for ways to stretch their budgets. Discount stores offer products at lower prices, making essentials like groceries, clothing, and household goods more accessible to those with limited income.

Fortunately, here in the northeast consumers have many options.  In most towns you'll find the Dollar Store, Dollar Tree, Big Lots, Marden's, Ocean State Job Lot, and more.

For many, the king of all discount stores is Dollar General.

Over the last decade, these stores have been popping up everywhere.  The chain offers a middle ground between the stores that sell nothing but off-brand products and non-discount retailers.  While they do have some great deals, they also sell brand-name food and beverage products.

Currently, there are over 20,000 Dollar General stores.  You can find a store near you by checking out their website.

Big Changes at Dollar General Stores

If you are a frequent shopper at Dollar General stores, you may have noticed some significant changes.

For example, locations that previously had self-checkout kiosks have all but gotten rid of them.

Additionally, the chain is making strides to improve the stocking process.  If you have ever been to a Dollar General store you may have noticed that some locations have piles of boxes (sometimes even pallets) at the ends of aisles.  If you have not already, you'll soon see that no more.

According to a summer 2023 article on Business Insider, the company had hired teams of traveling 'smart teams'.  The job of these teams is to travel from store to store organizing all that extra merchandise.

They later shifted that strategy.

A December 2023 article on the Customer Experience Dive website explained that the company had announced it was shifting funds from the 'smart teams' to employees assigned to the store.

Regardless of who does it, the goal is to provide shoppers with a better experience when they visit Dollar General.
