One of the Country’s Most Haunted Roads Is in New Hampshire
Doesn’t it feel like New England is the country’s most haunted region?
Maybe it is because of the age of our settlements, maybe it is because of all the horror movies set in New England, or maybe it is because we all know at least a few terrifying ghost stories set in New England.
Whatever the reason, ghost story season all hits harder for New Englanders.
According to one car rental service, one of the most haunted roads in the country is also one of New England’s most popular tourist road trips.
New Hampshire’s Kancamagus Highway
SIXT recently put out a list of the country’s most haunted roads, streets, and highways.
The Kancamagus Highway, which runs from Conway to Lincoln in New Hampshire, made it on the list.
The 34.5-mile road twists and winds its way through the White Mountains. While it is often traveled by locals making their way through the mountains, it is also a favorite of tourists. The road, which is very treacherous in the winter, provides travelers with spectacular views during the other three seasons. During the fall, it becomes one of the best places in New England to see foliage.
The road is very remote. There is nothing on it. There are no businesses and no houses. Considering this, it should not be a big surprise that there are at least a few stories of ghosts on the road.
The press release about the SIXT list highlights one in particular:
Kancamagus Highway, located in Conway, New Hampshire, is said to be haunted by the spirit of a loyal wife named Ruth, who desperately waited for her husband’s return. Travelers have reported seeing an oil lamp lit in a house visible from the highway, just as Ruth did for years, hoping for her husband’s return.
Have you ever driven the Kanc? Did you ever see anything paranormal?
For the record, it is pronounced "Kank-uh-maw-gus" NOT "Kank-uh-mang-gus" Okay? You got that? Good!
Other roads on the list include Clinton Road in West Milford (New Jersey), Interstate 4 near Orlando, and Arizona’s Blood Alley.
It has also been said that Route 2A through Haynessville is the most haunted road in Maine. According to Massachusetts Haunted Attractions, Dudley Road in Billerica is the most haunted road in Massachusetts.
