A former Portland, Maine, police officer will spend a few months behind bars after it was discovered that he had attempted to illegally obtain an automatic weapon.

According to an article on the WCSH 6 website, 69-year-old Levi Thomas Robinson Jr. has been sentenced to two months in prison.  His prison sentence will be followed by two years of supervised release.

The article goes on to explain that Robinson was the owner of a federally licensed gun store called Robinson Arms, located in North Yarmouth.  In October of 2022, Robinson, who is a former police officer for the Portland Police Department, reportedly forged the signature of a Portland Police Department officer in a note written on Portland Police Department stationery.

The message was an approval to have a Kriss USA Inc. Vector Cal. .45 ACP machine gun transferred from a Federally Licensed Firearms Dealer in Rockwell, Texas, to Robinson Arms in Maine.

The article explains that a licensed firearms dealer may, with proper law enforcement authorization, purchase fully-automatic weapons for use as a demo for government agencies.  This allows the agencies to evaluate the firearms before they purchase them.

The ATF reportedly investigated the request and found that it was fraudulent.

Here's a video showing the firearm in question.
