Central Maine Power is wrapping up a major grid upgrade in Midcoast Maine, part of a broader effort to make the state’s power system more reliable when Maine weather does what Maine weather does best.

According to a press release, the project replaces older transmission equipment with steel poles and covered conductor, both designed to better handle storms, falling limbs, coastal conditions and other causes of outages.

CMP says some parts of Maine’s transmission system are now 50 to 60 years old, meaning a number of poles and other components are reaching the end of their useful lives.

“Customers count on electricity every hour of every day,” CMP President and CEO Linda Ball said, adding that the company is investing in stronger infrastructure to better withstand increasingly severe weather.

Steel poles are more durable than traditional wooden structures, especially in harsher coastal environments. Covered conductor adds another layer of protection by helping reduce outages caused by trees, branches and other outside contact.

Transmission lines are essentially the highways of the electric grid, carrying large amounts of power between substations and communities.

CMP says similar upgrades are already showing benefits elsewhere in Maine. A recently rebuilt transmission line serving Augusta, Vassalboro and Winslow is providing added reliability while strengthening the region’s overall electric system.

The company says continued modernization will also help the grid keep up with future growth, including new development and increasing energy demand.

In other words, the goal is pretty simple: fewer weak links, stronger equipment, and hopefully fewer nights spent wondering when the lights are coming back on.
