After a long Maine winter, Sunbeam Roller Rink in Smithfield is ready to roll once again when it opens for the season on May 1. This year is especially exciting because 2026 marks Sunbeam’s 105th season. For generations of families, opening night at Sunbeam has meant the unofficial start of summer, bringing together longtime skaters, first-timers, and everyone in between.

Originally built in 1922, with the current rink structure dating to around 1925, Sunbeam is one of the oldest roller rinks in Maine and one of the few open-air roller rinks still operating in the country.

Sitting along the shore of North Pond, the rink has become famous for its wide-open windows, cool lake breeze, and old-fashioned atmosphere that feels like stepping back in time. The unfinished maple skating floor, nearly 100 feet long, has welcomed skaters for more than a century.

What makes Sunbeam truly special is that it has survived for 105 seasons while so many other historic rinks have disappeared. Through different owners, renovations, and generations of families, it has remained a summer tradition in central Maine. As the doors open again on May 1, Sunbeam is not just beginning another season, it is celebrating 105 years of memories, music, and skating.
