Why is Halloween Already Taking Over Maine Stores?

We need to talk. 

I walked into a store recently and there it was… pumpkins everywhere, skeletons,  and enough Halloween decorations to make you think October was right now.

Except… it isn't.

We’re still trying to enjoy summer. 

Grocery stores and outlets are already rolling out Halloween decor, and places like Hobby Lobby are fully committed to spooky season. And listen, I love Halloween.

I love the costumes, the decorations, the haunted houses, the pumpkin carving, all of it. But even Halloween fans have to admit… this feels a little early. 

Why Has Halloween Started Early in Maine?

It’s like we’ve gone from “enjoy the season” to “skip ahead to the next one.”

Before we know it, we’ll be drinking pumpkin spice lattes while wearing shorts in 80-degree weather and hearing Christmas music before the Halloween candy is even gone. 

So I looked into and the reason why it feels like we've been hit to early with Halloween is because: retailers want more time to sell seasonal merchandise. By putting decorations, costumes weeks or months ahead of Halloween, stores can attract early shoppers, and maximize sales before the season ends, according to North Eastern Edu. 

Marketing experts also say the longer people see seasonal displays, the more likely they are to make a purchase. Boo.

There’s something special about seasons arriving when they’re supposed to.

In Maine, we wait all year for summer, the beach days warm nights, and time outside. We’re not ready to trade that in for spider webs and inflatable ghosts yet.

Some people love what they call “Summerween,” and honestly, if buying decorations early makes you happy, go for it. But for the rest of us? We’re asking for just a little patience. 

Maine, we have a request: let summer finish its moment. Let us enjoy one more lobster roll, one more warm evening, and one more month without pumpkin spice everything. 

Halloween will get here. We promise.
