What Are These Orange Fence-Like Things Popping Up Across Northern Maine?

The Maine Department of Transportation is responsible for these orange fence things.

All through November, the MaineDOT had their crews installing 100 snow fencing arrays way up in northern Maine.

According to the MaineDOT, these simple fences...

,,,have proven to be an effective and low-cost solution for grounding snow before it drifts into our roads. Just another way our Snowfighters are keeping Maine moving!

Up north, it's a whole different game when it comes to snow. In Southern Maine we get snow, but it's rare these days to get the snow that people get up north. What kind of snow and drifting am I talking about? This picture is from just a couple of years ago in Madawaska.

That's what these weird orange fences will hopefully prevent on the highways in the Caribou, Presque Isle, and Cyr Plantation areas. That's where the photos of the fencing are from.

The MaineDOT put these pics on their Facebook page announcing the attempt to keep more roads open. Some preventative moves that will hopefully work! There was a lot of hope on some of the comments, and some serious Maine skepticism. One comment was,

That looks like more work than it needs to be. Why not just use the old wooden snow fence like they used to. That did work in 20 mph cross winds...

I can hear the thick Maine accent with this comment.

Good luck. Up there snow fences don't work in 20mph cross winds. More roads closed during winter season.
