After more than four decades as one of the longest-tenured retailers in Freeport, Maine, Polo Ralph Lauren is preparing to make a departure.

According to MaineBiz, the Polo Ralph Lauren outlet along Main Street in Freeport, Maine, will close permanently on Friday, August 21.

That eventual departure will leave a juicy 11,000 square foot space behind in a prime location right across the street from a newly renovated L.L. Bean flagship store.

According to the New York Times, Polo Ralph Lauren saw an opportunity in the early-1980's. People were flocking to visit the flagship L.L. Bean store and Ralph Lauren seized the chance to get in front of millions of potential customers each year.

The original Polo Ralph Lauren store in Freeport, Maine, was 6,000 square feet before expanding into a massive 11,000 square foot space years later.

One of of the other original retailers that surrounded L.L. Bean in the early days, Bass Shoe, closed their locations in Freeport just a few years ago.

Polo Ralph Lauren in Kittery, Maine, Will Continue Full Operations

While the Freeport, Maine, location of Polo Ralph Lauren winds down operations, the outlet in Kittery, Maine, will continue on. There are no plans to close the outlet in Kittery.

It's unclear if the decision to close in Freeport was a bottom line issue or a lease renewal decision. Liquidation sales will continue until the store's final day on Friday, August 21.
