Fire at Dover Humane Society Quickly Contained Thanks to NH First Responders

As a fur mom of 3 (who owns a rescue dog), stories involving animal shelters always hit a little differently for me. These aren’t just buildings, they’re safe havens. They’re second chances. They’re the places where scared, abandoned, and vulnerable animals wait for the moment their lives finally change for the better.

So hearing that crews responded to a fire at the Pope Memorial Humane Society in Dover, New Hampshire, immediately made my heart sink.

According to Strafford County Scanner, Dover Fire responded to the shelter on County Farm Road around 8:19 p.m. Tuesday after a fire alarm activation.

While investigating, crews discovered a small fire inside the building, which was quickly taken as a First Alarm response.

Thankfully, firefighters acted fast and were able to knock the fire down quickly before it could spread.

And honestly, that fast response may have prevented an unimaginable tragedy.

Anyone who has ever adopted a rescue animal knows how emotional shelters can feel. Behind every kennel door is an animal that’s already been through enough heartbreak, animals who rely completely on the humans around them to keep them safe. The thought of a fire breaking out in a place filled with animals who can’t simply escape on their own is terrifying.
