According to an article in the KJ, a woman is dead following a Thursday morning crash in the Central Maine town of Unity.

The article explains that 72-year-old Colleen Sullivan of Troy was driving on Waterville Road in Unity at about 9:45 AM when she reportedly crossed the center line and crashed into an oncoming tractor-trailer.

The article goes on to explain that first responders needed to cut her from the vehicle.  After being extracted, she was taken to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Sadly, at about 3 PM on Thursday, she passed away from her injuries.

The driver of the truck was taken to MaineGeneral’s Thayer Center for Health in Waterville to be checked out and to have a blood sample taken.  It is standard for a blood sample to be taken following such crashes. However, a representative for the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office said he did not believe speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

The driver of the truck was cited for having an improperly-secured load and for being overweight for the size of the vehicle.  However, investigators do not feel those infractions had anything to do with the crash.

The investigation into the incident continues.

Our thoughts go out to Colleen Sullivan's family and friends in this difficult time.

Sadly, we have seen in increase in traffic fatalities this year.  According to the Pen Bay Pilot, there have been 42 deaths on Maine's roads and highways since January 1, 2024.

Please drive safely.
