Maine Legislature Kills Bill That Would Have Banned Drivers Using Hand-Held Cellphones [POLL]
Augusta State Senator Roger Katz had introduced a bill that would have banned Maine drivers from using hand-held cellphones. The Maine Legislature has officially killed that bill with Wednesday's vote of 82-65 against it.
The bill would have had a $75 penalty for the first offense. Subsequent offenses within a three year period would be $150. Drivers could still use hands-free devices.
Those who were against the bill argue that it was unnecessary because distracted driving and texting while driving are already illegal in Maine.
