According to WMTW, the Maine Mall in South Portland has been evacuated.

The South Portland Police Department posted about the incident on their Facebook page on Wednesday, February 5, explaining that they were investigating an active situation and asked people to stay away from the mall.

Just before 4:30 p.m., the police department provided an update in a comment on that original post that did give a few more details about the incident.

According to the South Portland Police Department:

The South Portland Police are currently searching the Maine Mall for an individual suspected of shooting another individual this afternoon inside the Maine Mall. The preliminary investigation suggests that this is an isolated incident. Police do not believe the public is at risk, but they ask members of the public to avoid the area while they conduct the search.

The Facebook post also explained that South Portland Fire & Rescue transported one individual to Maine Medical Center. The individual's condition is unknown at this time.

The South Portland Police Department will provide additional information when it is available.

We heard from a listener working inside the Maine Mall that it was believed the evacuation was caused by an active shooter situation.  The listener said she saw a person on the ground near the food court.

She explained that the person appeared to be injured or deceased.

She also explained that, in order to get out of the mall, she needed to make her way through the Round One entertainment complex.

Other listeners have commented that they have friends and family members locked down in some mall stores.

Located in South Portland, the Maine Mall was built in the early 1970s.  The mall underwent a major renovation in the mid-1990s.

The Malls Fandom website gives a good breakdown of the opening & closing of key stores within the mall.

We will continue to update this story as we get more details...
