Our Top Picks For What Could Replace Denny’s in Augusta, Maine
For most of us, the sudden closing of the Augusta Denny's restaurant in late December came as a shock.
We had, for months, been told that the company was planning to close some of their underperforming locations, but there had been no indication that the Augusta location was going to be permanently shuttered.

The closure of this iconic chain restaurant has left an available commercial space on Augusta's Civic Center Drive. So, what should go into that space?
We have a few thoughts!
A Locally-Owned Diver - Even though the restaurant business has changed a lot in the last few years, it feels like there is always room for another old-school diner. Especially, if the place ends up being open 24 hours a day. Pancakes & eggs for breakfast, a BLT for lunch, and a massive chunk of meatloaf for dinner. Yes, we realize our area already has a few locally-owned diners, and they put out great food, but none are open 24 hours a day.
A Burger Bar - We have seen these businesses pop up in other parts of New England. In addition to great burgers and fries, you can also have a beer or an 'adult' milkshake. Some of these even feature karaoke or live music.
Sonic Drive-In - Keeping with the throwback vibe of the past few suggestions, we'd love to see a Sonic in Central Maine. These restaurants offer creative food, cool treats, and the closest one is located on Route 1 in Saugus. Yeah, it's a drive!
Friendly's - There used to be dozens of these restaurants spread across New England. Sadly, those days are gone. As of February 2025, there is only one Friendly's location left in Maine. We'd love to see the chain make a comeback, starting with a location in Augusta.
A 60s-Themed Strip Club - The building already has that 50s/60s feel, so why not? It could be a classy place. We haven't looked into the zoning, but we have a feeling that it might take some work to convince the city to approve it.
A Waffle House - Yes, we know these are more of a southern thing, but we'd love to see an affordable 24-hour restaurant that can cater to truck drivers, overnight workers, and people trying to sober up after a night at the bar.
Fogo De Chao / Steakhouse - While it would be cool to have a Brazilian steakhouse (like Fogo De Chao), we'd be happy with any steakhouse. Of course, it would take some major renovations to the old Denny's to make that work.
A Nightclub - While Central Maine does have a few 'dance bars', we really don't have an actual nightclub or dance club. While it is on the smaller side, there should be room for booths/tables on the left and a spot for a dancefloor on the right. Plus, it has a full kitchen so you can offer a variety of foods.
What do you think should go in the old Denny's location?
